As of 2026-10-23, sources show Hyde-Smith had not agreed to any of the debates Colom challenged her to, and her campaign dismissed the challenge as a 'debate about debates'; a Prospect report of 2026-11-02 says she 'has refused to debate.' The claim matches the post's wording, but no source quotes her directly refusing, and one interview-based source notes Colom did.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What we found

Supports. WLBT reported on 2026-09-30 that Hyde-Smith's campaign dismissed Colom's debate challenge, with the campaign manager saying 'Losing candidates always want a debate about debates.'[1]

Supports. Newsfromthestates reported on 2026-09-29 that Hyde-Smith did not debate Espy in 2020 and that 'it appears she doesn't plan to debate this year.'[2]

Supports. The Prospect reported on 2026-11-02 that Hyde-Smith 'has refused to debate,' and the 2020 Mississippi Free Press piece documents her refusal to debate Espy.[3][4]

Context. In a Q&A, independent candidate Ty Pinkins said Hyde-Smith refused debates, but interviewer Frazier said Colom had sent press releases inviting her to debate; this is a claimant's account and it does not change the record that she had not agreed to debate.[5]
