As of 2026-10-21, multiple reliable sources report that President Trump announced on August 24, 2026 that tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts and steel would rise to 50% starting January 1, 2027, so the January 1 date and 50% rate are supported as an announced plan.

… Two and a half billion dollars is also slated to go to the auto sector, which includes one and a half billion from the federal government and 1 billion from Ontario, and a change to maintain 2026 greenhouse gas emission standards until 2030. What we found

Supports. Reuters reports Trump threatened on August 24, 2026 to raise U.S. tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks and automotive parts to 50% starting January 1, 2027.[1]

Supports. AP and CNN report the same August 24 announcement of 50% tariffs on Canadian cars and auto parts as of January 1, and CBC reports the threat covered cars, trucks, auto parts and steel.[2][4][5]

Contradicts. Deloitte's September 30 alert states that no presidential proclamation or other implementing measure had yet been issued, so the increase was an announced intention rather than a formally enacted measure at that point.[6]

Context. The claim's January 1 date is the same deadline cited by the post's own passage, and the wider trade context (Section 338 tariffs in effect August 22 and Canadian counter-tariffs from September 8) does not change the January 1 auto-tariff date.[3][7]
