The US is clearly the largest economy by total GDP and has high living standards, but the sources do not establish it as the most prosperous country in human history. Per-capita comparisons cut against the superlative (City Journal says Norway and Luxembourg have higher average incomes), and the post itself framed the claim as a hypothetical ("if...

What was said
… prosperity are in the strength of our institutions, and if we were doing terribly, that would give us a really strong argument for, "Let's rip everything apart. Let's fire everyone at the Census Bureau. Let's redraw the election district," blah, blah, blah. But if, instead, we're the most prosperous country in the history of the world, then the chances that if we rip everything down we end up better, that seems like a really bad bet. Contradicts. City Journal (2012) reports that US per-capita income is near the top but that Norway and Luxembourg have higher averages, so the superlative fails on a per-capita measure.[2]
Supports. Political Economy (2025) says the US 'remains the most prosperous and technologically powerful country in the world,' and Hudson Institute (2009) ranks it fourth on a prosperity index, so the US is widely described as among the most prosperous nations today.[3][4]
Context. Sources that address the US economy's historical trajectory, including FactCheck.org (2025), say real GDP per capita today is many times higher than in the Gilded Age, but none of them states that the US is the most prosperous country in all of human history.[1][5]
Context. The 'most prosperous in the history of the world' phrasing appears only in an opinion essay (School of Thought, 2021) with low credibility, so it is not authoritative corroboration.[6]
