MapQuest's own figure of over 1.5 million installs across the U.S. and Canada was reported by TechCrunch on September 2, 2026, and repeated by later outlets. Independent Sensor Tower estimates were far lower (about 632,000 U.S.

What was said

… The name change came on John Turnus's first day as Apple CEO, taking the reins from Tim Cook. Ah, just not a surprise. Google had had done it before, ah, as I said. Um, and one company, a little company called MapQuest, which I covered a hundred years ago, is back, baby. Ah, the downloads at 1.5 ah million, the top of the charts. Actually, I changed myself. It's i forgot how good it is, actually. Ah, yeah, how how un- uncreative Google Maps are, and changed everything. …

What we found

Contradicts. Sensor Tower data cited by TechCrunch and Digital Trends put U.S. downloads at about 632,000 since the executive order, well below 1.5 million, and heise reported 184,000 worldwide downloads in the week before September 2.[2][3][4]

Supports. TechCrunch reported that MapQuest said the app had seen over 1.5 million installs across the U.S. and Canada combined, and that figure was repeated by Times of India and CNET.[2][5][6]

Context. Business Wire's August 31 release described only 'hundreds of thousands' of downloads, and System1's August 9 release claimed 2 million new users in a week, a figure that predates the surge and is not directly comparable.[7][8]

Context. The AP later reported that the app topped the free charts in the U.S. and Canada after the surge but did not confirm a cumulative download total.[1]
