Network was released in 1976, not 1978. The BBC, AFI Catalog, Wikipedia, IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes all give 1976 release dates (Wikipedia and IMDb say November 27, 1976). The 1978 date in the post matches only a CBS television broadcast reported by the Washington Post, not the film's release.

What was said

… A guy in a T-shirt that he bought from a roadside stand at a political rally, suggesting that every single person who doesn't align with him politically is out to destroy the country, might not actually be the good guy. If you've never seen Network, it was put out the year before I was born, 1978. Notice everything that Beal says there: the economy, a dollar buys you a nickel's worth. I don't know what to do about Russia. Weird, you could shoot it today. …

What we found

Contradicts. The BBC's 2016 retrospective states the film was released in November 1976 and that its poster was for a 1976 release, contradicting the 1978 release year.[1]

Contradicts. Wikipedia, IMDb, the AFI Catalog and Rotten Tomatoes all list the release date as November 1976 (November 27, 1976 for the US release per Wikipedia, IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes).[2][3][4][5][6]

Context. The Washington Post's 1978 article covers a CBS national television broadcast of the film on October 3, 1978, not its theatrical release, which likely explains the 1978 date in the post.[7]
