Mike Johnson@MikeJohnsonOct 19, 2026PolitiFact, a tier1 fact-checker, rejects the causal claim, finding Biden's policies are not considered the prime culprit for high gasoline prices and that bigger factors drove them.
What was said
… Now gas prices are too high. Right now, inflation is too high. But that's related to the conflict in Iran. And as soon as as that is resolved, which I think happens soon after the election, then prices come back down. The reason they went to $5 a gallon under Biden is because of all the things you just said. They wanted to end fossil fuels. What's that going to do for your gas prices? You have to keep the grownups in charge, steady hands at the wheel. That's why Republicans have to keep control of Congress.

Contradicts. PolitiFact rates JD Vance's claim that Biden policy caused high gas prices as false, stating Biden's policies are not considered the prime culprit and experts point to bigger factors shaping U.S. refining.[1]
Contradicts. FactCheck.org reports gas prices began rising before Biden's inauguration, with the average weekly price already up about 60 cents when he took office, and attributes the rise to global supply-demand issues and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[2]
Context. Brookings describes the Biden administration as aiming to reduce fossil fuel supply through limits on drilling on public land and reduced oil and gas investment, which supports the existence of a supply-restriction policy but not a goal to end fossil fuels outright.[3]
Context. PBS reports Biden said gasoline prices were averaging a record $5 a gallon while he pursued a shift away from fossil fuels, documenting the price level without establishing that the policy caused it.[6]
Context. Partisan sources (a Republican Senate Policy Committee paper and a House Oversight Committee report) assert Biden energy policies drove higher gas prices, but these are advocacy documents that the fact-checkers above do not corroborate as a primary cause.[4][5]
