Sources support that the government's citizenship policies (the CAA combined with the NRC) have left large numbers stateless, mainly in Assam, and that critics see them as targeting Muslims.

A guest makes this claim. Listeners heard it, so it counts against the post, and on the guest's own record.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What was said

… Right, like, that is not the governing framework for fascism, but it is Hindutva, which is motivated by anti muslim racism, caste supremacy, and also anti migrant racism, right? All of the changes that we're seeing under Hindutva that are denationalizing and stripping people of citizenship, particularly from Muslim regions of India. So those are very connected in many different parts of the world, and so I think it is so important to understand the ways in which anti-migrant racism is not only about migrants on the move, but it is part of a much bigger project of fascism, and so …

What we found

Contradicts. A Foreign Policy analysis reports that of nearly 2 million people excluded from Assam's NRC, about 1.2 million were Hindus and other non-Muslims, undercutting the claim that stripping of citizenship targets Muslims specifically.[4]

Contradicts. The CRS (Library of Congress) notes that the CAA, while excluding Muslims from its naturalization path, does not itself strip existing citizens of citizenship; the ethnocracy and ethnic-democracy literature likewise describes risk and practice rather than a documented mass revocation in Muslim regions.[2][5]

Supports. A CUNY event page (2026-10-23) states that about 2 million people in Assam were rendered stateless through the NRC process, with some sent to detention camps.[3]

Supports. Academic and advocacy sources describe the CAA plus NRC as a mechanism that could challenge or revoke Muslims' citizenship, with administrative procedures that are hard to appeal.[5][6][7]

Context. A Daily Star/AFP report dated 2026-11-01 says 40 lakh people were left off Assam's draft citizen list, critics say it targets Muslims, and the Registrar General said no one would be deported or arrested. This post-dates the claim and does not establish the state of affairs on 2026-10-03.[8]

Context. The 'Hindutva' framing and claims of anti-Muslim intent come mainly from academic, advocacy and opinion pieces; the 2024 AP report describes Hindu nationalist policies as in place, including Kashmir's loss of special status, but does not address citizenship stripping.[1][9][10]
